Design and Technology at Courtney
Design and Technology nurtures pupil’s imaginations and creativity combined with real world problem solving skills. Throughout the teaching of design and technology we hope to inspire the children’s ability to communicate their own ideas, their own solutions and their likes and dislikes.
We hope to allow children the opportunity to select appropriate materials, tools and techniques. for creating their “product”, whilst following health and safety guidelines (goggles on kids!).
Furthermore, we also hope to nurture enjoyment, satisfaction and purpose when designing and making ‘solutions’ for the ‘problems’
We teach a variety of topics throughout the entire school: cooking and nutrition; mechanisms (including cams); textiles and fabrics; structures including woodwork; electrical circuits and electricity; as well as learning and researching about important design engineers.
This year, 2019, in Courtney, Design and Technology will be getting its own special week where the school will learn together around the theme of ‘Eggs’- just in time for Easter. The children will be busy creating and then inviting parents in to support with construction and to view the finished articles. This will lead to an after school design club for those inspired to take their learning in a new direction in terms 5 and 6.
In KS1 the children learn about:
- Design through talking and drawing
- Preparing simple dishes hygienically and understand where food comes from
- Explore and evaluate a range of existing products
- Explore and use mechanisms like levers and sliders
- Build structures and evaluate how they can be stronger, stiffer or more stable
- Select materials according to some required characteristics
- Use techniques that include- chopping/peeling/grating and weighing as well as cutting, sewing, running stitches and gluing.
In KS2 the children learn about:
- How food can be grown, caught and reared (especially in conjunction with geographical focuses), the seasonality of food and restrictive diets (rationing in world war two) as well as the principles of a healthy, balanced diet (in unison with science)
- Investigate and analyse a range of existing products for effectiveness and against design criteria (including the use of ICT for research like types of bridges- beam, truss, cantilever etc)
- To use research and develop design criteria together to inform the designs aimed at particular groups and audiences and then to use the criteria for evaluation purposes also.
- Apply their understanding of how to strengthen, stiffen and reinforce more complex structures
- To generate, model and communicate their ideas through cross-sectional diagrams and prototypes- incorporating motors and electrical circuits where necessary
- Understand how key events and individuals in design and technology have helped shape the world.
